Self determined composer Hugh Flynn has called his genre of contemporary orchestral music World Orchestral Music to dissociate it from the elitist classical fraternity. The driving nature of Flynn's music sets it apart from the over dramatic forms of classical music. The routes of World Orchestral Music are firmly based in Romantic period symphonic music and worldwide folk music. The music has more in common with big band folk and jazz than the classical music period. Music is similar to food, the best recipes come from the peasant's kitchen. The World Orchestral Orchestra would contain a large percussion section to provide the driving force for a rhythm section that would be more powerful in live performance than a rock band. Since ELP and Deep Purple rock groups have tried to incorporate orchestras in their stage shows, but due either to their egos or musical limitations the band and orchestra were always 2 separately perceived entities. World orchestral music would have all the energy and excitement of rock/orchestra fusion, but without the limitations of musicianship and structure and without the gap between the solo artists and the orchestra. The instinctive musicianship is closer to folk music than classical music. The orchestra would behave as a big band capable of producing a wall of sound where necessary. There would be much more interactivity between the conductor and the musicians. With the eventual incorporation of musicians and instruments from as many parts of the world as possible the orchestra would be capable of producing an infinite range of timbres and would have an enormous dynamic range. World Orchestral Music has taken on board lessons learnt from electronic music. The orchestra is set out to enable the composer and conductor to emulate stereo effects used in electronic music, such as chorus and delay. |
